Yves Saint Laurent – L’Homme Sport: Overview, Smell, Notes & More!

Hailing from the revered French fashion house, L’Homme Sport is a popular fragrance from YSL L’Homme.

Though it’s by no means the most popular product in their line, it continually pleases its intended target audience.

Released in 2014, the perfume was discontinued before reaching its fifth birthday.

It’s not the best end to the story, but a story worth looking at nonetheless.

Overview

  • Brand: YSL
  • Fragrance: L’Homme Sport
  • Release: 2014
  • Gender: Men
  • Perfumers: Anne Flipo, Juliette Karagueuzoglou

Fragrance Notes

  • Top Notes: Verbena, Bergamot, Aldehydes
  • Middle Notes: Coriander, Fresh woods
  • Base Notes: Cedar, Amber

What Does YSL L’Homme Sport Smell Like?

Unlike its counterpart L’Homme Libre, Sport is more fresh than it is spicy.

The former is more of a well-worked balance of both.

It opens with a crisp, clean air of citrus supported by an undertone of a laundry-type scent.

The zesty citrus is undoubtedly from bergamot and lemon verbena, but the latter is more recognizable, carrying lemony smells we’re all familiar with.

The aldehydes are a breath of fresh air in this perfume.

More common in women’s fragrances (Chanel especially), they bring about the soapy, laundry-like aroma.

As it dries down, a light spicy scent accentuated by the coriander emerges.

This is supported by a developing woodiness from the cedar and amber that usher in a warm, resinous finish to the scent.

The fragrance begins and ends with appropriate scents for a sporty occasion: a fresh opening to dispel the sweat, and a warm base to finish off with character.

How Long Does It Last?

As an EDT, it doesn’t last that long.

About 4 hours is the furthest it can take you, which is not bad considering it was made to suit a more sporty event.

However, this projection is known to be its biggest disadvantage.

Although many applaud the fragrance’s enlivening aroma, the longevity (or lack of it) is enough for them to reconsider the purchase.

The sillage may not hold up compared with other products, but it is still enough to attract compliments.

When Should You Wear It?

This scent is light, so you can wear it all year long.

However, it’s not cozy or even sensual, so the freshness might feel a bit off in the winter months.

To get the most out of it, stick to using it in the summer.

Keep in mind, though, that it’s also a great option in the springtime.

The scent may not be as vibrant as a Dior Sport cologne, but it is lively enough for you to limit it to daytime use.

Where Should You Wear It?

Despite the fragrance being marketed to the more athletically inclined consumer, it very much suits the average, casual guy.

It has an  8/10 versatility rating, with the remaining 2 points accounting for it not being suitable for nighttime events.

You can wear it to work, but longevity will again be its biggest flaw.

Going back to sporty events, it’s more suited to a gym session than an intense afternoon of soccer or basketball.

So one should use it more for sports and activities that are not too physically demanding.

Presentation and Value For Money

The vibrant green liquid represents a sense of energy, activity, and, as quoted from YSL, the “virile, self-confident man.”

Because L’Homme fragrances are in same-style bottles, a quick way of identifying it (aside from the liquid color) is through the red stem inside the bottle.

You can still find it today despite its discontinuation.

Top department stores like Marshall’s are known to stock it from time to time.

The price range is about $30 to $85 depending on size, which is not bad overall.

The Bottom Line

This fragrance is an outlier.

Whether that’s a good or bad thing, it’s no secret that it was well-built for casual occasions and wardrobe emergencies.

It’s also a good blind buy, so if you’re lucky enough to come across this fragrance, scoop it up if your wallet allows it.

Perfumes that Smell Like YSL L’Homme Sport

If you liked reading about this celebrated bouquet, you may want to check out three similar products.

1. Zaad Go (O Boticário)

Zaad Go is a woodier, spicier alternative.

The likes of oak and saffron enhance its spiciness, but it also comes off as fresh with the assistance of notes like lavender.

2. L’Incontournable Blue 2 for Men (Rasasi)

L’Incontournable Blue 2 has a similar opening of citrus notes, but the middle is spicier compared to the YSL bouquet.

Carried by cardamom and geranium, the dry down is characterized by a rich, woody smell in the form of musk and sandalwood.

3. Yardley Original (Yardley)

Yardley is similar in that it boasts similar smells of citrus and warm woods.

It still maintains its own identity though, and you can expect cinnamon and mandarin orange to be a few of the most pronounced accords.
