Mugler – A*Men: Overview, Smell, Notes & More!
Mugler A*Men Eau de Toilette embodies a man’s charisma, sophistication, and elegance.
It’s a bold, masculine fragrance, one that immediately takes you to heaven but becomes more universally appealing as you let the fragrance evolve on the skin.
Bold, intense, and fascinating, the A*Men EDT is a compliment getter, even after just one spray.
It oozes virility and intensity, something many ladies absolutely love.
Mugler A*Men: Overview
- Brand: Thierry Mugler
- Fragrance: A*Men
- Release: 1996
- Gender: Men
- Perfumer: Jacques Huclier
The A*Men EDT, also known as “Angel Man,” came out in 1996, the first-ever male fragrance crafted for the luxury brand.
The brand’s fragrance line blew up after the Angel perfume in 1992, a fruity patchouli scent that defined “Gourmand” as a new olfactory family.
It was a true masterpiece by perfumers Yves de Chirin and Oliver Cresp.
Four years later, Thierry Mugler worked with perfumer Jacques Huclier to create the masculine rendition of the Angel perfume.
The Angel Men cologne subsequently proved a huge success, the same timeless masterpiece as the original Angel.
This masculine version takes the character of a contemporary hero, a confident and adventurous man who knows his strength and has the ambition to conquer the world and put it in a bottle.
It takes the chocolaty patchouli heart of Angel then adds tar to come up with another successful creation that screams masculinity throughout its fragrance lifetime.
Like a real superhero, the Angel Men EDT has had many revivals or sequels over the years.
These fragrances all share A*Men’s modified DNA but with some unique twists from other compounds.
For one, the Pure Malt version is a cult classic with a boozy caramelized whisky aroma.
Meanwhile, the Pure Tonka features smokier aspects, and Pure Havane has sweet tobacco dipped in honey scent, giving it a caramel-like sweet bite.
Fragrance Notes
- Top Notes: Bergamot, Lavender, Peppermint
- Heart Notes: Patchouli, Tar, Coffee Bean
- Base Notes: Musk, Chocolate, Caramel, Vanilla, Tonka Bean
The A*Men EDT belongs to the woody-oriental spicy fragrance family.
It evokes a man’s virility through its woody base, a lavender-patchouli combo.
It might be a very risky try and a strange masculine combination, but with the daring strength of the coffee absolute, everything makes the fragrance unique.
What Does Mugler A*Men Smell Like?
The A*Men cologne smells like what you would imagine a bold, seductive man would smell like.
The scent is so addictive and freaking delicious with sweet and green notes that it’s almost edible.
Unlike other colognes, it has a sweet scent.
There’s nothing fruity or citrusy about it, a key characteristic of several sweet perfumes.
It has spicy notes on the first spritz as the woody aroma combines with many sweet fragrances like peppermint, lavender, and vanilla.
The coffee note jumps out at the early stages, along with the tar note.
However, the tar opening quickly fades, but the lavender helps with its wearability.
How Long Does Mugler A*Men Last For?
The A*Men EDT has good longevity.
The spicy scent at the beginning is almost too sweet, but it will not last more than an hour or two.
When the initial burst mellows, the smell evolves into something seductive and unmistakably masculine that lasts at least six hours.
When Should You Wear It?
The perfume scent isn’t overpowering, even with the burst of spiciness at first.
So, it would work as a casual scent you can wear every day, all year round.
Where Should You Wear It?
Although it has a nice aroma and would likely attract compliments, its projection is middle-class at best.
It can entice a date with its seductive scent, but probably not the entire room during a huge event.
Presentation and Value For Money
You can get the A*Men EDT in two bottles: a black rubber flask and a silver metal flask.
Although the cologne boasts great longevity, the silver metal flash is refillable.
You can also purchase a refill bottle for it.
Speaking of the glass bottle design, Thierry Mugler came up with it himself.
The bottle looks good on the shelf, with its sophistication reminiscent of travel flasks with the signature blue star at the center.
The A*Men is a product that was released years ago.
As it’s been quite a while since its initial release, it’s quite hard to come by.
Those that do stock it may price it differently to their competitors; the price per bottle may vary too.
Perfumes that Smell Like Mugler A*Men
1. Le Male (Jean Paul Gaultier)
This perfume carries a lot of the same ingredients you can find in the A*Men formula.
So, you can expect the same characters like the bold, sensual, and irresistibility you get from the A*Men.
Both contain almost similar bases that make them seductive to women.
2. Fahrenheit (Dior)
For an aroma that screams “Male” like the A*Men cologne, this bottle comes a close second.
It has delectable spiciness, but the bold leather undertones may not be for everyone.
3. La Nuit de L’Homme (Yves Saint Laurent)
It doesn’t have many similar ingredients as the A*Men, but it carries the same powerful and explosive spicy and woody accords.
It’s dark, intense, and irrevocably male.
The Bottom Line
The Angel Men EDT perfectly captured the essence of a male hero in a bottle.
For a signature fragrance that is all “male,” the Mugler A*Men EDT is a fantastic option to consider.
