How to Use Fragrance Oil? (5 Ways)

Fragrance oils, or aroma oils, are synthetic compounds manufactured in the lab to resemble pleasant, naturally occurring scents.

Manufacturers usually add a few drops of such oils to create fragrant cosmetic products, cleaning items, or room sprays.

What are Fragrance Oils?

As mentioned, aromatic oils, or fragrance oils, are synthetic substances created to emit a pleasant smell that resembles natural scents.

There are currently two main types on the market:

  • Synthetic Fragrance Oils. This scented oil category is made of artificial ingredients alone. Their scent lasts longer, which makes them a popular choice in cosmetic products.
  • Natural Fragrance Oils. Although this formula is still created artificially, manufacturers use naturally occurring compounds combined with artificial ones. Perfumers often recommend these perfume oils to those with sensitive skin or allergies.

Unfortunately, fragrance oils have a relatively short lifespan, lasting only up to 12 months.

By comparison, essential oils can last up to 15 years.

However, many manufacturers still prefer fragrance oils due to their low production cost and unique scents.

How to Use Fragrance Oil?

Although they’re mainly used to create a pleasant scent at home, you’ll often encounter aromatic oils in the following areas too:

Room & Car Fresheners

Just a few drops of your favorite fragrance oil is enough to freshen up your home.

Mix the perfume oil with plain water in a spray bottle and give it a good shake before each use.

To make a car freshener, add a few drops of fragrance oil on a cotton ball and place it under your car seat.

You can also gently stroke a cotton ball soaked in oil on a love note or gift packages for a unique smell.

Candle Making

Scatter a few drops of fragrance oil right next to your own candles’ wick.

Once the candle wax burns, the oil scent will slowly dissipate for a long-lasting olfactory experience.

You can get a similar result if you spread a few drops of aromatic oil on the cold light bulb of your lamp or if you fill a special oil burner.

Relaxing Baths

To make your own bath salts, mix one cup of Epsom salt with a few drops of fragrance oil for a relaxing scent.

Since you’re here, you can also add a couple of drops to add aroma to your bath bombs.

Cleaning Products

Adding a few drops of aromatic oil to your baking soda container makes for a great carpet cleaner.

Test the mixture on a small surface first to make sure the baking soda doesn’t affect the material.

Additionally, you can soak a paper towel in fragrance oil and gently rub the interior of your shoes for a fresh, amazing scent.

You can also place paper towels soaked in such perfumes between your clothes or in various spots of your linen closet.

Self-Care Products

Turn your unscented shampoo into an explosion of scents by adding a few drops of your favorite fragrance oil.

To create a unique body wash, combine two unscented soap bars with one tablespoon of coconut oil and 6 cups of water.

Make sure to add water that’s already warm to your mixing bowl and keep stirring until the combination melts.

Fill a shampoo container with the coconut mixture and you’ll get a moisturizing lotion that appeals to most people.

Is It OK to Put Fragrance Oil Directly on the Skin?

Fragrance oil is often used in cosmetics such as body lotions and creams due to its long-lasting smell.

For example, you can make your own perfumes at home using the following recipe:

  • Half a cup of witch hazel
  • 1 cup of distilled water
  • 10-15 drops of your favorite fragrance oil

Simply mix all the ingredients and store them in an empty spray bottle.

You can use the resulting product as a room spray or a body perfume since both options smell great.

Additionally, you can get a hydrating body scrub by mixing equal parts of olive oil, sugar, and just a few drops of fragrance oil.

Make sure to always stick to the original recipe for each skin care product, as too much oil might cause adverse reactions.

However, experts recommend avoiding synthetic fragrance oil applied directly on the skin for allergic or sensitive people.

This means you should always take precautionary measures before handling such substances (such as wearing protective gloves).

Essential oil is a much safer option for sensitive individuals for its natural ingredients.

Another key difference between the two oils is their medicinal properties: essential oils are an ancient method of reducing inflammation and treating migraines.

Can You Mix Fragrance Oils With Water?

Generally, fragrance oils don’t blend well with plain water.

You can either include a solubilizer into your mix or choose a water-soluble product.

However, you can safely add a few drops of aromatic oil to most unscented body lotions, shampoos, and soaps to create your favorite spray.

Alternatively, you can combine fragrant oils with a carrier oil for a unique smell that can be applied directly to the skin.

The Bottom Line

Fragrance oils are synthetic liquid compounds manufactured to emit a pleasant smell.

They’re mainly used for home scenting sprays and diffusers, body fragrances, and cosmetics.

Although they’re often mistaken for essential oils, aromatic oils contain artificial ingredients, which means they also lack medicinal properties.
